Why do some people get bitten by Mosquitoes more than others?

Mosquito-1-150x99Scientists aren’t sure what makes certain people more attractive to mosquitoes. They know that mosquitoes are drawn by large amounts of carbon dioxide and heat. They also prefer the scent of cholesterol, folic acid, bacteria from drying sweat and many perfumes, colognes and shampoos. What we do know is using a professionally licensed pesticide company employing good Mosquito Control practices and you will greatly reduce your mosquito populations. These practices work well in all of  Gloucester, Rockport, Wilmington, Reading, North Reading and Andover MA .

Mosquito Hawk? I Think Not!

Mosquito Hawk? I Think Not!

250px-CraneFly-123x150

There is a common misconception about the insects that we call “mosquito hawks.” The picture above captures a long-legged fly that is all too often mistaken as a mosquito killer—the adult crane fly. As opposed what could be considered “true” mosquito hawks—like a dragonfly—the crane fly has been caught in a case of mistaken identity.

It is ironic that the crane fly (eponymously named after the long-legged and slow flying crane) has been misconceived as a mosquito hunter when the insect itself doesn’t eat much of anything. Crane flies are anatomically incapable of killing or eating mosquitoes. These large, spindly creatures bounce off walls and ceilings while just going about their way.

Crane flies, much like moths, are attracted to light. They oftentimes hover near porch lights and windows, unintentionally invading homes as they maneuver their way towards lights. Though they do appear as enormous mosquitoes, crane flies are not blood suckers either. Rather, they feed on the roots of grasses.

So, what is the big deal then? Why do crane flies matter in the grand scheme of things? Though they might not be getting rid of the buzzing nuisance that the Mosquito Enemy team is here to help you with, crane flies do play an important role in the environment. The larvae of the crane fly decompose organic waste lying around on the bottom of streams and forest floors—they thus help enrich soil and enhance the habitats of other creatures. Crane flies are also make a quick meal for animals like birds, reptiles, amphibians, other insects, and fish.

Though they might not be the mosquito eaters we’ve built them up to be, the crane fly plays an interesting part in the myths surrounding mosquitoes!

A Little Rain in Wilmington MA Doesn’t Ruin A Mosquito’s Day

A Little Rain in Wilmington MA Doesn’t Ruin A Mosquito’s Day

Rain. It cools the earth after a hot summer day and offers a refreshing reprieve from the harsh summer season weather. For humans, rainfall doesn’t do much other than wet your clothes and water your plants. That, however, isn’t the case for many insects. Especially since raindrops weigh about 50 times as much as a mosquito though they are roughly the same size. Rain also falls at such a rate that it’s impossible for the insects to avoid them. Through the compound eyes of a mosquito, a trip out in the rain is more like running out into high-speed traffic.

In spite of that, mosquitoes will often continue their lifelong quest to irritate anyone unlucky enough to become their next meal. Everyone’s least favorite summer pest has evolved a very special way to stay airborne during a rainy day. The mosquitoes of today are built to endure a downpour. Their combined adaptations of a unique exoskeleton and low mass render them impervious to force of falling raindrops.

Recent research has revealed that mosquitoes receive low impact forces from raindrops because the mass of mosquitoes causes raindrops to lose little momentum upon impact.

The studies conducted used high-speed videography to watch mosquitoes in action.

When faced with a rainy situation their body’s take any collisions, relying on their ability break free from the front of the raindrop. Mosquitoes achieve this through the use of their long legs and wings. By utilizing the drag of their appendages, mosquitoes are rotated off the point of contact. When slowed down it looks like the mosquito barely takes a hit at all. Since not much momentum is transferred, the lanky physiology of a mosquito will allow it to recover quickly and go about it’s merry way.

When it comes to getting out and enjoying the summer, mosquitoes don’t let mother nature rain on their parade. So don’t let mosquitoes stop you from enjoying the summer season yourself and call Mosquito Enemy for mosquito control today!

Annoying And Dangerous

Mosquito InformationJeff Emerson

Compared to others, she is relatively tiny. She can lay 300 eggs at once in an area as small as a bottle cap. She injects her victims with an anti-coagulant, stopping the blood from clotting, enabling her to access as much of it as she can take in. She sucks blood but doesn’t depend on it. She would rather store the blood for her young. She and her like have killed more humans than any other living creature on earth, spreading disease in her wake.

Though she seems like a creature from a typical horror story, she is a real-life form, though she is found to be more annoying than she is frightening. But if you knew the above about the backyard pest, the mosquito, you may just take her just a bit more seriously. Her bite, and it is hers, since her male counterpart doesn’t have the same sucking equipment that she does, causes red, itchy, swollen bumps on the human skin. But through that tiny little bite, millions of cases of dengue fever, malaria, West Nile Virus and encephalitis have spread throughout the world and its human population.

Which is exactly why we call ourselves Mosquito Enemy. We want to eradicate as many swarms of these nasty, tiny little beasts as we can. When it comes to mosquito control, we are driven to protect you, your family and even your pets against them and the diseases that they can carry. We are Eastern Massachusetts’  and Andover‘s best in mosquito control. With almost two decades in the pest control business, Mosquito Enemy is a seasoned veteran in the fight against mosquitos and ticks. If you believe you have a problem with either of these pests, call for a personal consultation. We are happy to help with a customized plan to help keep your home and family protected against the tiny yet dangerous creature.

New Mosquito Virus In The News

Mosquito InformationJeff Emerson

icon2Chikungunya Virus Is here in the USA, four people have been diagnosed within the state of Florida. It was only in October that it was first discovered in the Caribbean. Currently there are over 5,400 documented cases of the Chikungunya virus in the Caribbean Islands within the last 3 months. Now that it has a start in the USA, the CDC and health officials have a close watch on it. Mosquito Control in Andover, North Andover and North Shore areas is your first defense against this new virus. The virus symptoms are headache, fever, vomiting and deep-bone pain. All but the bone pain subsides in two to three weeks. Officials have said the bone pain can last from months to years after you have been infected. We do not know much about this virus at this time. However it appears that this virus may infect other mosquitoes thru a blood meal of the infected host. This virus is different then Tripple E and West Nile Virus for that very reason. Officials are concerned that this could be the underlying cause of such a fast spreading of this virus. They do warn everyone to limit your exposure to mosquitoes by wearing repellents, staying inside at dusk and dawn. Or you could have your yard treated against mosquitoes and ticks by a licensed and certified professional at Mosquito Enemy Call Today at (978) 363-2222

Controlling Mosquitoes and Their Stings

Mosquito InformationJeff Emerson

Controlling Mosquitoes and Their Stings

Though its hardly an issue, it is a pet peeve of many pest control technicians; so lets get this straight once and for all: mosquitoes do not bite, they sting, much like a bee would.

There, that being said, the important issue here is the effect of those stings. Mosquitoes carry a high number of diseases that include malaria, dengue fever, and west nile virus that have collectively killed more people on earth than any other living creature. While 2,900 people are killed by hippos every year, a million more die from malaria spread by mosquitoes in any given year. It should go without saying that preventing mosquitoes from stinging you should be a priority and not just to avoid the inconvenience of uncomfortable itching.

Obviously to avoid being stung the first step would be to try to rid your outdoor areas of mosquitoes. As a top-rated local® choice formosquito control in Andover, Mosquito Enemy can rid the area of ticks and mosquitoes with professional products and techniques. But you can reduce the numbers of pests also by removing any areas of standing water where mosquitoes love to breed.

Mosquitoes are particularly irritated by citronella. Try burning citronella candles while enjoying outdoor activities. Apply either chemical-based repellents that contain DEET or more natural options that show some effect against pests like tea tree oil or vitamin B. Wear loose, long-sleeved shirts and long pants leaving less open skin for mosquitoes to feed upon. Make sure to wear light-colored clothes as dark colors absorb more heat and body heat attracts more pests. Stay away from flooded areas with standing water. Try to avoid being outdoors during peak mosquito times which are early morning and the twilight hours.

Eliminating mosquitoes from your outdoor areas can be accomplished with regular mosquito control treatments and goes far in protecting your family from their nasty stings.

Can a mosquito pass HIV?

Mosquito InformationJeff Emerson

Picture-150x112Can a mosquito pass HIV?

No. Mosquitoes actually digest the virus, so it does not replicate and is broken down before it can be transmitted to someone else. Also, mosquitoes pass such minuscule amounts of blood when biting that infection is not possible. However Mosquito Control is very important to protect your kids and the elderly from other viruses and diseases that these vector insects transfer from a host to you. If you live anywhere in the east coast area of Massachusetts Mosquito Enemy can help you with all your Vector Insect needs.
